Who to vote for?
I thought I should put something on my blog about who I'm supporting for Labour's Deputy Leader, and why. I genuinely found it difficult to choose, but I eventually decided to back Peter Hain. That's because, as readers of this blog will have realised, I do feel that tackling climate change has to be a top priority for government, and Peter has incorporated that issue into his campaign priorities more than any of the other candidates. I know he's also had a record of being involved in the issue for decades, so I think his knowledge and commitment on the issue is real and substantial.
It's a preferential voting system, of course, so I've got 2nd, 3rd etc votes as well. I'll almost certainly vote for Jon Cruddas for 2nd choice, as I think he has done more than any of the candidates to put the issue of reinvigorating the Labour Party and reconnecting with our grass roots on the agenda of this election campaign. I think that needs to be a continued focus for the Labour Party leadership, and a good vote for Jon will help emphasise that need.
After that - I'm still making up my mind! (And you can let me know your views by taking part in the poll on my main website - the poll should be up and running soon, I hope!)

Sadly, Mark, if you vote for Peter Hain, as you did for Gordon Brown, then you are supporting a candidate who voted for the illegal decision to invade Iraq on the instructions of our American masters. Tony Blair knew there were no weapons of mass destruction before the invasion of Iraq and now we learn that he knew that the US had no plan for a post-war Iraq yet he still committed British troops to an illegal war that has led to a catastrophic civil war, the deaths of British service personel and of hundreds of thousands of Iraqis as well as a massively heightened risk of terrorism at home. Tony Blair as well as Gordon Brown and Peter Hain, who you support for the party leadership roles, and the rest of the Labour Cabinet, who accept the principle of collective cabinet responsibility, should be impeached and charged with war crimes for initiating an illegal war of aggression on the basis of calculated untruths and misinformation. They took Britain to war on a false prospectus. In a democracy, the voter actively supports and condones the actions of those they vote for. Sadly, this means that a vote for Labour is a vote of support for the grossly irresponsible, incompetent and catastrophic decisions made by Tony Blair and your preferred leaders, Gordon Brown and Peter Hain.
Your constituents should be aware that their MP is supporting the very people who got us into the war in Iraq.
